Preparing a drawing file is less about making it look polished and more about preserving reliable information. A clean PDF should let someone identify the correct floor, read its dimensions and understand which revision they are reviewing. Those basics save repeated clarification later.

Keep an untouched source copy

Retain the original file in a separate location before cropping, compressing or annotating it. Give the working copy a name that includes the project, floor and revision. If the document contains several unrelated sheets, identify the pages relevant to the current study. Do not remove the title block from the only copy: its date, scale notes and drawing references may be needed to explain the resulting geometry.

Check legibility at the point of use

Open the PDF and zoom into a small dimension, room label and section reference. If those are unreadable, a modeler will be forced to infer details. A sharper export from the authoring application is preferable to enlarging an already blurred screenshot. For a scanned page, check that the paper is flat and the image is not skewed. Inspect the edges as well as the middle; folded sheets can distort different regions differently.

Record units and scale evidence

Note the stated units and one or more written dimensions that can be checked independently. Page size and a printed scale are useful context, but a PDF may have been resized after export. Do not assume that an on-screen ruler reproduces the original drawing scale. When preparing a manual room study, enter confirmed dimensions rather than relying on a visual measurement alone. Keep uncertain dimensions on the review board until someone can resolve them.

Package the drawing with a brief

A useful handoff includes the file, a short explanation of the design question and a list of known omissions. State whether the study concerns room arrangements, gross areas or the relationship between floors. In the current TranslateDesign preview, PDF attachments stay in this browser and are not processed by AI. Download originals separately when backing up a project; the geometry JSON import does not restore drawing files.

  • Preserve the original and label the working revision.
  • Check small annotations before uploading or sharing.
  • List units, dimension references and unresolved questions.
  • Avoid treating a cropped picture as a complete drawing set.
